Independence Day

Today we celebrate our declaration of independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Americans are gathering throughout the nation, enjoying parades, picnics, barbecues and fireworks in celebration of freedom from oppressive rule.

Yoga invites us to liberate ourselves on a daily basis from the tyranny of external influences and negative habits. It guides us to enter the “Kingdom Within,” finding time to remove ourselves from the whirlwind of society and delve into the very core of our being. It beckons us to break out of the mold of our social conditioning, unfold our fullest potential and live with vibrancy, joy and power. This is part of the process of Moksha, or self-liberation, and of  becoming a Jivanmukti, or liberated being.

Even the smallest of steps in this direction can produce profound results over time. This week, I invite you to move towards self-liberation and independence through these practices:

  • Express yourself in a way you have always wanted to but have been hesitant to do.
  • Journal your personal aspirations and then choose one to embrace and manifest this year.
  • Resolve to quit a small habit that has inhibited you from moving forward in your life.
  • Find a simple way to break out of your condition and stretch your boundaries.

May you celebrate your independence and liberation every day from now on!
