Heart Altar

The Sanskrit term Hridayam means that which is especially nourishing or healing for the heart. In this context, it is referring to the Heart Center as opposed to the actual organ of the heart.

This is the place where Yoga teaches us that the Soul resides, like a golden flame of light. Hrydayam also can mean “the cave of the heart,” referring to this sacred place as a meditative cave where one finds enlightenment.

Today’s invitation is to visualize your Heart Center as a sacred cave with a candle burning brightly at its center. In meditation, create an altar around the inner candle. Decorate it with whatever comes into your consciousness… incense, gemstones, rainbows, great sages… whatever works for you.

Visit this “inner Altar” as often as possible. Sit in stillness and silence. Say your mantras and prayers in the Hrydayam. Treat it with profound reverence. Never forget this sacred place.
