Your Authentic Self

My Very Authentic friend, Reef.

As we move from childhood to adulthood, we try on many roles in our lives. The way in which we perceives ourselves is shaped by our experiences, our upbringing, our culture and mass media. We are given role models to emulate, stories with heroes and villains, and sundry iconic characters to model ourselves after.

Our families and our societies have expectations for us, and we seek either to embrace or rebel from these pressures.

By the time we reach adulthood we often find that we are still playing various roles and have yet to truly find ourselves. This can cause an underlying discomfort in our lives despite our progress and successes.

Yoga invites us to liberate ourselves from all role-playing, bring our awareness down from our heads and into our hearts, and listen to the whisper of our souls. As we deepen this dialogue, our truest self is revealed. We can then move towards living in this truth as authentically as possible.

I invite you to further unfold your authentic self in these simple ways:

  • Take time for stillness, silence and listening to your heart.
  • Make all your conversations as authentic as possible.
  • Seek to remove yourself from inauthentic situations.
  • When you feel any aspect of your deeper truth, journal it and do your best to act on it.
  • Open to the grace and beauty of being you, just as you are!
